What is it? Limestone pavement comprises exposed, flat expanses of Carboniferous, Dalradian and Durness limestone. The flat slabs of rock are scored with deep, undulating fissures (known as 'grykes'). These can be up to 6m deep, although most are 1-2 m. Shallow erosion pans and pock marks are also found on the intervening blocks ('clints').

25.05.2021Strip, trench fill or pad foundations must be cast at a minimum depth of 750mm in low plasticity clays, 900mm depth in medium, and British Standard 8004 recommends a minimum depth of 1m for foundations in the highest risk areas. If there are, or were, trees nearby, depths of up to 3m may be necessary.

Limestone is one of the most durable options out of all building materials. It's strong and dense, and contains few pores. Less pores make it harder for the stone to break, and allow it to withstand abrasion and freeze-thaw. It's also weather resistant, making it the perfect option no matter the climate you're in.

As shown in Figure 1, the first step in quarrying is to gain access to the limestone deposit. This is achieved by removing the layer of earth, vegetation, and rock unsuitable for product—collectively referred to as overburden—with heavy equipment

Soluble rocks include salt beds and domes, gypsum, limestone and other carbonate rock. Florida, for instance, is an area largely underlain by limestone and is highly susceptible to sinkholes. When water from rainfall moves down through the soil, these types of rock begin to dissolve. This creates underground spaces and caverns.

The distribution of DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) and δ 13 C DIC showed that DIC is mainly sourced from soil CO 2 (g) influx and carbonate dissolution. δ 13 C DIC and major ions ratios suggested that carbonate minerals were dissolved by H 2 SO 4 at groundwater in wooded area, contributing an important source for DIC due to the slight enrichment of
