Millwood in South Africa was the site of a short-lived gold rush in the 1880s. Millwood Mining Village was located in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains near Knysna and had a population of a few hundred at the height of its small-scale mining activity which lasted only five years, largely due to the difficulty of following the vein in much-folded formations.

Founded as a silver mining town in 1880, nearly 2,000 people lived here at its peak. We wandered into some of the miner's cabins, saloon, and hotel tucked away in Castle Creek Valley's picturesque setting. We arrived at Aspen Highland to catch our shuttle. The old mining town of Barberton is nestled along South Africa's 10th World Heritage Site, the Makhonjwa Mountains in the De Kaap Valley of Mpumalanga, in South Africa.
